Outlaws cruise in victory over Northeast

MARLOW — It’s not every day a team will win a game by 62 points without attempting a pass.

But that’s exactly what Marlow did Friday night, torching the Northeast Vikings 62-0 on homecoming night, in a game nearly settled after the first quarter.

Outlaw’s running back Chris Walden led Marlow (3-3, 1-2) with 89 yards rushing, scoring twice on runs of 31 and four yards. Brandon Burns added three touchdowns, rushing for two scores from seven and eight yards. Burns also returned an interception for a touchdown in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, putting the end to a miserable game for Northeast. The Vikings finished with 13 yards of total offense.

“We really needed that,” head coach Barry Foster said. “We needed to come out and play hard.”

After stopping Northeast on its first offensive series, the Outlaws drove the short field with ease, scoring on a one-yard run by Lance Cramton with 7:10 in the first quarter, set up by a 40-yard run a play earlier by Walden. Cramton added another score minutes later, running the ball in from 19 yards, making the score 15-0.

“We knew we might get up on them,” Foster said. “There’s really not a whole lot you can say, but I’m glad we were able to get some other kids in the ball game.”

While Marlow didn’t throw a pass all game, quarterback Chance Rice didn’t miss his chance to join in on the fun. Rice had a 56-yard punt return at the end of the first quarter, putting the Outlaws ahead 23-0.

“I think we did some real good things tonight,”

Foster said. “The defensive game plan worked really well and we got some kids in there who deserve to play.”

Marlow had 14 first downs on offense, usually gaining just one or two a series, as each drive began on the short side of the field. Foster said, in fact, that they didn’t reach all of their offensive goals because they simply couldn’t. Marlow only punted the ball once time all game.

“I wish we it could be like that every week,” Foster said. “We got interceptions, returned a punt, everything just worked out.”

Trevor Archer added a touchdown for Marlow in the second quarter, scoring on a three-yard run through several Viking defenders, stretching the score to 42-0.

Marlow’s defense allowed 44 yards passing, knocking down several balls in the secondary while intercepting three passes. Northeast quarterbacks Michael Thomas and Taylor Dequantae combined 7-for-18 passing.

Marlow will travel to Purcell next week, taking on the Dragons Thursday night.
