Velma-Alma reaches softball state tournament

DUNCAN —
After a weekend of regional play, Velma-Alma is headed to the state tournament. The Lady Comets beat Rattan to earn the right to play next weekend in Oklahoma City, possibly against Jordan Brown and the Bray-Doyle Lady Donkeys.
Duncan will enter its regional tournament on a high note after beating Collinsville 3-1 behind the pitching of Judy Dines. Duncan had several big hits on Saturday, coming from behind to beat Bishop-Kelly earlier in the day.
Marlow’s season ended Friday afternoon, falling to Lone Grove after its offense stalled. Marlow finished its season at 25-11 but wasn’t without its highlights. Several of the Marlow seniors had outstanding seasons, and coach Brian Miller reached 400 career wins earlier in the year.
Comanche was also bounced from the playoffs, losing 10-0 to Purcell.
Stonewall RegionalSTONEWALL — Velma-Alma’s softball team is headed to the state tournament.
After its 8-2 win against Rattan, the Lady Comets are headed to Oklahoma City. Head coach Jimmy Miller said the pairings won’t come out until Monday but a matchup against Bray-Dolye is likely.
Kyla Sutton earned the win for Velma-Alma (23-9) and will look to keep rolling next weekend.
East-West ShootoutTULSA — After picking up two of three in Tulsa, the Duncan softball team is ready for the regional tournament.
Behind Judy Dines and some timely hitting, Duncan (25-10) came back and beat Bishop-Kelly and Collinsville after losing to Coweta on Friday.
Against Bishop-Kelly, Duncan fell behind 4-2 giving up three runs in the sixth inning, but saved its best for last. After three base hits and an RBI from Ashley Green cutting the lead to 4-3, Mackenzie Gibbs hit a three-run walk off home run to win the game 6-4.
Caylin Lynch and Ashley Green had two hits apiece for Duncan, as Sarah Harper and Kenzie Kennedy each had RBIs.
Dines pitched for Duncan, striking out nine batters and not allowing a hit until the sixth inning.
Duncan then beat No. 4-ranked Collinsville 3-1, again behind Dines in the circle. She struck out three batters and allowed two hits, as the defense stepped up.
“We played a lot better,” head coach Robert Cowan said. “We only had one error and were able to keep them from scoring in the last inning when they had a few runners on base.”
Kennedy had a single and scored on Sarah Harper’s RBI base hit in the fourth inning. The Lady Demons scored all three of their runs in the fourth.
On Friday, Duncan lost 3-2 to Coweta as Madison Pewitt pitched and took the loss. Pewitt and Allison Edwards each had a hit for Duncan.
Duncan will play in the regionals on Tuesday, facing Western Heights at 3 p.m.
“If we don’t make any mistakes I like our chances,” Cowan said.
Lone Grove RegionalLONE GROVE — The Marlow Lady Outlaws’ season ended Friday, in a 9-1 regional playoff game to Lone Grove.
Marlow (25-11) beat Madill earlier in the day 8-3, but ran out of gas against the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A.
Hayley Harris pitched for the Lady Outlaws, taking the loss against Lone Grove. Head Coach Brian Miller said errors proved again to be the Achilles’ Heel for Marlow, which committed several with runners in scoring position.
“We had at least four errors come at a bad time,” Miller said. “The score isn’t real indicative of how we played.”
Bretlie Richardson went 2-for-3 with a double and Sydney Shannon had two hits for Marlow. Shannon came into the weekend hitting .475 and finished just under .500 for the season. Miller said she finished with 22 doubles and five home runs on the year.
“We just couldn’t quite get a break in the final game,” Miller said. “We don’t feel bad about how we played, we went against the number one team and showed we can play.”
The Lady Outlaws didn’t reach their final goal though, picking an unfortunate time to let up on defense. Miller said the defense, combined with a few unlucky breaks on offense, kept the Lady Outlaws from getting back into the game.
“We still hit the ball well, but every time it seemed like it was right at somebody,” Miller said.
Marlow finished with nine hits. Tasha Dodd finished the game 2-for-4, closing her season hitting near .400.
Purcell RegionalPURCELL — Comanche lost to No. 4-ranked Purcell 10-0 Friday afternoon, ending their season short of a state finals appearance. The Lady Indians beat Lindsay earlier in the day 7-5, but couldn’t find the offense against Purcell.
Tanya Whaley and Shayna Milam pitched for Comanche against Lindsay, and the Lady Indians were able to score several runs, getting two in the seventh for the win.
But the bats went quiet against Purcell. Milam, Whaley and Kenzie Reed all pitched for Comanche. The Lady Indians had two errors that led to four runs in the second game.
Head coach Bill Berry said his team was able to play well against Lindsay, but were just over-matched against Purcell.
“The girls played well all year long,” Berry said. “They kept working hard and that was one of the reasons we had such a good year.”
