MARLOW After two stellar wrestling careers at Marlow High School, Dave and Drew Weske put pen to paper Monday on scholarships to Labette Community College and will continue the sport they’ve been involved with since they were four years old.

The Weske’s, twin brothers who helped lead the Outlaws to a state runner-up finish, are the third and fourth MHS wrestlers to sign scholarships this season. Derek Thompson also signed with Labette, while Jacob Peck accepted a scholarship to wrestle at Oklahoma State University.

“I’m just excited to get up there and get going,” Drew said. “We are going to have a lot of fun.”

Dave, who won a pair of state runners-up medals as an Outlaw, said that he is just as excited as his brother and that he has lofty goals.

“We’ll get up there in July, and I can’t wait until then,” Dave said. “It’s a good program too, so winning a national championship sounds good.”

Dave and Drew have good reason to be optimistic about potentially winning a national title. The Labette Cardinals placed third at this season’s National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament and had seven out of nine advance to become All-Americans and one National Champion.

“I would say that it is the equivalent of an OSU at the junior college level,” former MHS head wrestling coach Mike Peck said. “They are going to a good program.”

Dave ended the season with a 27-14 record, while drew went 29-8. Both reached finished as state runners-up, Drew at 171 pounds and Dave at 189.

The pair had an offer from Oklahoma City University, but opted for Labette.

“It’s further from home, but I think I will enjoy the small town atmosphere,” Dave said. “It will be a lot like Marlow.”
