Demon golf takes second at state
Duncan takes home second state-runner up trophy in three years
By The Banner Staff
ARDMORE —
The Duncan Demons couldn’t overcome a 14-stroke deficit to Class 5A state tournament leader Ardmore Tuesday, finishing with their second state runner-up trophy in three years.
The Demons, who shot a 587 on Day 1, shot 294 for an overall score of 881. Ardmore, playing on its home course at Dornick Hills, shot an 854. Deer Creek, who won last season’s state title at The Territory, took third with an 893.
“They (Ardmore) just played really outstanding golf,” Duncan head coach Ed Cox said. “Fourteen over par for the entire tournament is impressive.”
Despite the Tigers’ impressive play, Cox said the Demons played well.
“That first round was a little tough to overcome, but we came back that second and played much better,” Cox said. “We did well in the final round, but Ardmore was just playing lights out.”
Much like the end of the first day, Duncan’s scores were consistent throughout. Duncan lowest and highest scores were separated by just four strokes.
“That shows how well our guys played up here,” Cox said. “All of them played consistent golf, and they have nothing to hang their heads about. We had a successful season and are very proud of our runner-up finish.”
Tyler Rice ended the tournament with a 76-72-72 — 220, while Andrew Wilcox shot 75-73- 72 — 220 to lead DHS and put two Demons in the top 10. Rice and Wilcox were each named to the Class 5A All-Star by class team for finishing in the top 10.
Tanner Harman ended with 77-71-73 — 148, Derek Harman 76-70-77 — 223 and Jamie Gray shot 74-73-77 — 224.
The Demons lose seniors Derek Harman, Gray and Rice next season, and Cox was grateful for their efforts.
“They’ll be tough to replace,” Cox said. “They added a lot to our program.”
