5-17 Church Briefs


  •  Unitarian Universalist Lawton

The Duncan Diners, Unitarians from Duncan and surrounding area, will held their monthly meeting for dinner Thursday at Don Jose’s restaurant.

Sunday, Rev. Scot Harvey, guest minister from Oklahoma City, will speak on “Not Forgetting Tomorrow.” He will discuss how we are often advised to live in the present, but are we not also responsible for tomorrow?  Adult Forum will have an open discussion of “How Was Your Week?”

  •  Western Heights Baptist

The Men’s Ministry will have their quarterly breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Sunday before Sunday school. The church members will hold their monthly Deacon’s and church council meetings Sunday before the evening service. The following Wednesday will be the monthly business meeting.

Worship with Tony Hooper, minister of music, will be followed by a sermon by Pastor Chris Percival.

In Sunday school, the adult classes are in week 12 (Look for Spiritual Excellence – Titus 2:1) of the Exploring the Bible study guide. The children’s class is studying in the Book of Acts and about how WHB church began.

This will be the last week of home school band practice.

  •  Good Shepherd Lutheran

On this Day of Pentecost, Pastor David Heitner’s sermon will be titled “The Gift of the Holy Spirit.” Relevant scriptures to be read will be Genesis 11:1, Acts 2:1, and John 14:23.

The “God For Us” class, for those wanting to know more about the Lutheran faith, is offered at noon on Tuesdays in the north end of the building.

  •  First United Methodist

Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. The music will include the introit sung by Tara Cook and accompanied by Justin Sommer, Jared Eoff, and Dace Palmer. The anthem is “Every Time I Feel the Spirit.”

Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle will finish the sermon series: “Faith Lessons from the First Christians: Your Mission, Should You Decide to Accept It.” The scripture is Acts 2:1. The reader will be Jack Stanton. Come and worship this Sunday.

You are also invited to attend the Connexion service in the FUM Center. This service is a modern worship style (praise band and media) with a traditional understanding of faith. Dr. Tolle preaches the same sermon in both services.

  • OACD, Oklahoma Conference of Churches pair up for ‘drought prayer’

    Oklahomans are being asked to focus on water conservation and stewardship and continue to keep drought-affected areas in their thoughts. A state-wide day of prayer has been set for 6 p.m. Sept. 18, backed by Oklahoma Conservation Districts, Oklahoma Conference of Churches and Whole Creation Community partnership.

    Almost everyone has at least one defining experience in their life which makes them take a closer look at all the beliefs they hold.
    For Michael Shank, author of “Muscle and a Shovel,” his came when he attended a Bible study taught by a former co-worker only revealed as Randall.
    Shank will share his story Sunday, Sept. 1, in three services at Eastside Church of Christ.
    Services will be open to the public and are at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
