Nelson recipient of Distinguished Leadership Award

DUNCAN — Disciple’s Home Missions recognized Rev. Arnold Nelson, minister of First Christian Church of Duncan, with its Distinguished Leadership Award.

This award is given every two years to a preacher in either the United States or Canada for their service in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. The recipient is selected by the DHM staff and board members.

Prior to coming to Duncan, Nelson served for five years as president of Disciples Home Missions. His move to Duncan was a return to the local pastorate, which he greatly enjoys.

Ronald Degges, current president of DHM, traveled from DHM headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind., to present the award to Nelson. The presentation took place before the FCC congregation.

Degges said part of what factored into the selection of Nelson for the award was the fact that he has served in different leadership capacities at First Christian Church. He has been with the church since December of 2007.

Additionally, he has become a home missions advocate by dedicating much time and effort to improving the community and the lives of its residents. Several

Nelson said he was humbled by the award and modestly mentioned he wasn’t sure his work was worthy of the honor.

“I think it’s an award considerably beyond the service I’ve given,” he said.

“I am glad to have it.”
