The Duncan Banner
Summer means Vacation Bible School for many area churches.
VBS planners use different themes geared at children to make the programs entertaining.
Some churches are combining efforts, like First Christian and First United Methodist.
“We’ve been doing a program with First Christian for as long as I know which is about 30 or 40 years,” Kathy Gibson, director of ministries to families at First United Methodist Church in Duncan said.
“We preview different VBS themes each year and we do the one that we feel is best to present the gospel to the children.”
This year, several churches are using the same theme, “SonSurf Beach Bash,” including First Christian and First United Methodist.
Their VBS is June 13-17. A closing program will be held at 11:30 a.m. June 17 for parents, produced by the children.
“This is the time where our kids who have worked hard will get to show and perform some of the songs they have worked on all week,” Gibson said.
Other churches have picked “The Big Apple” for a theme, based on the city of New York and what it can offer for Christians. Marlow’s First Baptist Church is one of those.
“Our children’s ministry is fond of Lifeway productions and we looked over the curriculum and liked where the program was going for our children,” Dr. Joe Ligon, pastor of First Baptist Marlow said.
“We normally average around 200 kids and with workers we will have up to 300.”
Ray Of Hope is hosting a “Shake it up Cafe” VBS program which has a sub-theme of “Where Kids Carry Out God’s Recipe.”
Pre-registration is at 7 p.m. July 13 and includes food and games for children.
First United Methodist Church in Marlow has “PandaMania” Vacation Bible School planned for this year. It includes offering Bible adventures which fit in with the theme. VBS is from 9 a.m. to noon July 18-21.
Registration for FUMC-Marlow is by phone. Call 580-658-2765. New Hope Baptist Church also use “The Big Apple,” theme. Its VBS is from 6 to 8 p.m. July 18-21, for children in grades K-5.
