RawChurch provides musical light show

Park and turn on radio to hear the music

DUNCAN — Christmas magic is in the air, or rather the airways, at RawChurch. Last year’s initiative from the church to start a synchronized light show with about 12,000 lights has expanded with an additional 4,000 lights to bring extra magic for the holiday season.

The 16,000 L.E.D. lights are synchronized to Christmas songs. Pastor Jason Farris said the lights flash and leap with the music.

“There is a box called a control box,” he said. “Inside that box is a DMX controller that sends the signals to the lights.”

The program for the songs is customized and programmed by the distributor of the DMX box and is customized specifically for the size and layout of RawChurch.

With the cooler weather that accompanies the holiday season, RawChurch wanted to make sure that people could enjoy the light show without getting out of their cars. An FM transmitter transmits the Christmas songs over the air onto the FM station 87.9. The signal reaches about 200 yards away from the building.

Besides giving people a holiday show, Farris said the goal of the show is to reach out to people that the church normally would not be able to reach.

Every two or three songs, an announcement plays during the show inviting people to be a part of their Christmas worship services at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 23. Last year, the church experienced about three times their normal attendance at their Christmas service and Farris said he thinks that the light show contributed to that.

“It is a great way to invite people to church without putting a lot of pressure on them,” Farris said.

The lights will be running every night from about 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and will run through the new year. RawChurch is located at 1302 N. U.S. Highway 81 (north of the Goodwill store).

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
