Rebuilding continues for Liberty Baptist Church on Fuller Road.
After over a year of reconstruction from the wildfires early last year, the church is approaching completion.
“We hope for a Christmas opening,” said Carolyn Allen, chairman of the rebuilding project.
Though they hoped for a much sooner completion, the congregation has been hampered by the challenges that come with any construction project.
For example, after a portion of the building was approved, Allen reported, they were notified that they had to create a smoke wall, which set them back even further.
Also, they have relied primarily on the efforts of volunteers, “which has been challenging,” Allen said.
“Finding the volunteers has been easy.
The challenging part was preparing the project for the volunteers.”
They have relied heavily upon Campers On Mission, a volunteer group sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.
Their spirits, however, are hopeful.
“God has been good to us,” Allen said. “All that needs to be finished is the drywalling, the suspended ceiling and the carpets.
The absolute final project will be the furnishing of the building.”
The new church is 10,000 square feet and will hold 202 people in the sanctuary.
On March 1, 2006, the church burned to the ground during the massive wildfires that occurred in the area.
The congregation meets at 10:40 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays at South 81 RV Park, and will continue to do so until the church building is completed.
