They came to pray

With prayers in their hearts and joy in their singing, more than 100 local residents came together Thursday at the pavilion in Fuqua Park in humility to pray for the multiple facets of the community.
“It’s a great idea for the community to be involved in the National Day of Prayer,” Brenda Knabe said. “Today is a day and time in history when we need to band together.”

  • Bringing society together for prayer
The annual National Prayer Day celebration in Duncan will take place May 1 at the gazebo at Fuqua Park and will involve local government, media, educational and religious leaders.

  • Eastside Church of Christ presents Bible Teachers Workshop
Once again, Eastside Church of Christ in Duncan is offering a Bible Teachers Workshop to the community, with some new teachers and topics this year.

  • Teaching love
More than 30 years ago, Rigoberto Varela left a country, left a religion and found Jesus.
Immigrating from Juarez, Mexico, with his entire family, wife, children, parents and in-laws, they settled in Lawton at first, but soon realized Duncan was where they wanted to be.
“Lawton had too much violence,” Varela said. “I wanted to live in a place where I could raise my kids and take them to church.”

  • Duncan celebrates Easter season
Many Duncan churches are celebrating the Easter season with special services and activities in addition to their regular Sunday schedule.
One of the milestone events will be the much-anticipated first public worship service in the former J.C. Penney building. Acquired last year by First Christian Church and dubbed its “South Campus,” the renovations are not quite complete, but “Sunrise on Main” will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday with a theme of “A Service of Light and Fire, of Water and the Word.”

  • Prayer walk
Black History Month's annual prayer walk offered prayer and song.

  • Time for rally
Mullins Baptist Association is conducting an evangelism rally Feb. 25 at Fair Baptist Church, north of Empire School. The rally will begin at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude about 8:15 p.m.
A stew and cornbread meal will be served from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. A “sweet” fellowship will follow the meeting.

  • Journey of faith
A few years ago, without even realizing it at the time, Susan Lindley stood at a crossroads in her life.
With her legal career in the U.S. attorney’s office in Oklahoma City behind her, her son a young adult and her husband looking toward retirement, the Duncan woman could have followed an easy path to her own retirement.

  • Volunteers rebuild their church
Rebuilding continues for Liberty Baptist Church on Fuller Road.
After over a year of reconstruction from the wildfires early last year, the church is approaching completion.
