Firefighters deserve a round of applause

DUNCAN — Rarely – and fortunately – are members of the Duncan Fire Department and their friends put to extreme tests.

But as we saw last week at the Foursquare Gospel Church fire, when the need arises, they are well-trained professionals, capable of dealing with difficult conditions and minimizing damages.

Preliminary results from an investigation by state officials revealed copper gas lines had deteriorated, causing tiny perforated holes that enabled gas to escape in a mechanical room and ignite.

While there was little chance to save the building, Duncan firefighters, with help from companies in Marlow, Comanche, Velma, Empire and Meridian, managed to contain the blaze and prevent it from causing further damage.

It was not an easy task.

High winds, billowing dark smoke and the uncertainty of explosions prompted considerable risk for those fighting the fire, for nearby property owners and even for spectators who gathered to watch.

Handling well a situation that could easily have been worse was good work. Thanks.
