DUNCAN — Douglas Alfred “Doug” Strange, of Duncan, peacefully passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2012, at Duncan Regional Hospital. He was 87 years old.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Comanche with Bill Mayes, nephew, officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Stephens County Honor Guard, will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, under direction of Comanche Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home in Comanche.

Doug was born March 21, 1925, at Munday, Texas, to W.G. Jr. and Jewel (Liles) Strange. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. On March 31, 1947, he and Sylvia “Babe” Mayes were united in marriage at Henrietta, Texas. She preceded him in death in 2001.

Doug and Babe came to Comanche in 1948, where he worked at the Firestone Tire Shop. In 1951, Doug purchased the furniture store which then became Doug Strange Furniture and Appliance. Doug loved working at the business, meeting people and helping people out.

He also enjoyed collecting antique cars, going to car shows around the country, and he dearly loved living on their farm and raising cattle. Doug was a charter member of the IOOF Comanche Lodge No. 1. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Comanche Masonic Lodge, and a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He served for many years on the Comanche School Board of Education.

Doug actively supported many organizations in the community and American Cancer Society and Stephens County Hospice.

Survivors include four children: Larry John Mayes and wife Virginia, Arlington, Texas, Doug Strange Jr. and wife Meg, Comanche, Charryl Cox, Comanche, and Teresa Young and husband Dave, Duncan; a brother, Don Strange and wife Joan, Lawton; three sisters: Alpha Jouret and Wilma Gallop, both of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Doris Butler and husband Scott, Burleson, Texas; a sister-in-law, Jo Strange, Comanche; 13 grandchildren: Kevin Mayes, Stephanie Glover, Chad Strange, Cameron Strange, Cooper Strange, Stephen Austin, Scott Austin, Corey Andrews, Casey Andrews, Terra Andrews, Brendhan Fritts, Jessica Jones and Ryan Young; also 19 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary bearers are Don Strange and Larry Van Self.

Special thanks to the loving caretakers that worked in the home Lynn, Irma and Luce, the many caring professionals at the Duncan Regional Hospital Home Health Care, Duncan Regional Wound Care and the Duncan Regional Hospital.
