Bernice Oneta Selby Johnston, 97, of Comanche, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at her home in Comanche.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the First Baptist Church in Comanche, with the Rev. Timothy Ball officiating, assisted by the Rev. Trent Young and the Rev. Randy Southerland. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Bernice was born June 13, 1915, in Comanche, to Joseph Leon and Elizabeth Belle (Jones) Selby. She graduated from Comanche High School and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Central State College (Now University of Central Oklahoma). She taught in the Loco, Empire and Comanche school systems and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Comanche.
She married Johnnie A. Johnston, and he preceded her in death in May of 1985.
Bernice is survived by three children: Elizabeth B. Johnston Burchell of Hattiesburg, Miss., John A. Michael Johnston and wife Nancy of Oklahoma City, and Joe Bud Johnston of Coweta; seven grandchildren: Lonnie Burchell, Linda Burchell Novak, Christopher Shane Johnston, John Charles Johnston, Addison Johnston, Audrey Johnston, Kelly Marie Johnston; six great-grandchildren: Alston Bayley Novak, Ashlyn Bentley Novak, Anna Belle Novak, Noah Johnston, Micah Johnston, Jennifer Cannon; three great-great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Ann Marie and Ty Cannon.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Darrell Leon “Bud” Selby; and two sisters: Clarice Marie Coggins and Eve Mae Selby.
Pallbearers will be Jay Kyle Johnson, Jimmy Paul Johnson, Ted Paul Johnston, Rick Gilger, Shorty Brown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Comanche Public Schools or the First Baptist Church of Comanche.
