Wayne F. Hower

Oct. 26, 1914 — Sept. 6, 2013

DUNCAN — Wayne F. Hower, 98, beloved husband and father, longtime resident of Duncan, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his home in Duncan. He is now joyfully with Jesus, his Lord and Savior.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at All Saints Episcopal Church with Father Bill Carlin officiating.

Reception will follow in the church gathering hall. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Wayne was born Oct. 26, 1914, at a farm outside Warren, Ohio, to David L. and Mary Lullie Hower. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1937, from Youngstown University and his master’s in 1939, from Indiana University. He also attended Princeton University and MIT.

Wayne worked for Sherwin Williams in Chicago, Ill., from 1939 to 1943, as an organic research chemist. He then served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946, as a submarine electronics officer (in charge of radar) aboard the USS Toro in the Pacific Theater.

After the war ended in 1946, Wayne went to work for Halliburton Services as a research chemist, where he obtained 16 patents for Halliburton, three of which were international. He retired from Halliburton in 1980.

Wayne married Sarah Alice Reynolds on March 7, 1948, in Pittsburg, Texas. After a honeymoon in Kansas City, he brought her to Duncan, where they lived their entire married life. She preceded him in death Aug. 22, 1987.

Wayne was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, was voted Oklahoma Chemist of the Year in 1980, and served as president of the Clay Minerals Society in 1984.

Wayne is survived by two daughters: Libbi Davis and husband Charles of Edmond, and Judith Hower of Forestville, Calif. He had two granddaughters, who he loved very much: Kristen Davis Holmes and her husband Teddy, and Alison Davis Berger and her husband Thomas. Wayne was so proud of his almost 1-year-old great-grandson, Noah Holmes. He is also survived by a host of other family and close friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice, and two sisters.

Wayne will be missed so very much by his family and friends. We will miss his quick wit, his jokes and his many stories. He was such a smart, kind, generous, yet humble man.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stephens County Humane Society, PO Box 669, Duncan, OK 73534. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.granthamfuneralhomes.com.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
