Vernon Dean Lusby

Sept. 20, 1932 — Oct. 13, 2013

DUNCAN — Vernon Dean Lusby was born to Albert Edward and Sue M. (Daughtery) Lusby in Elk City on Sept. 20, 1932, and departed this life in Duncan on Oct., 13, 2013, at the age of 81 years and 23 days.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Duncan with Pastor Ron Meador officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Elk City with Pastor Mark Little officiating under the direction of People’s Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf.

Viewing will be at Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan between noon and 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. at the same location. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Assembly of God Church, Missions Fund. Please view and sign the online guestbook at

Dean grew up in Elk City and started preaching at the age of 12 and doing revivals before he could drive at the age of 16. He married Helen Jo Solomon on Nov. 22, 1951 in Elk City.

He started his pastoral work in 1953 in Hobart then Carter, Watonga, Madill, Greggton, Texas, Little, Cyril, Marlow, Oak Grove, Texas, East Mountain, Ryan, Foster and finally retiring from Walters in December 2012.

While he was a pastor, he also did roofing on the side. He enjoyed fishing, watching his cows and visiting with strangers. He was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roy J. Lusby, Joseph Warren Lusby and Albert Edward Lusby, Jr.; and two sisters, Geneva Florence Bryant and Zephia Jewel Hickey.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Jo Lusby of the home; two sons, Terry Dean Lusby and wife Barbara Jean of Duncan and Larry Joe Lusby and wife Diana Kay of Marion, Kentucky; two daughters, Kathy Suzette and husband Michael Lynn Carter of Duncan and Karen Anita and husband Bobby Welch Jr. of Brussels, Belgium; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

    Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, Duncan. Interment will follow where Bette will be laid to rest beside her husband in a family cemetery in Alma.
