Vern David Buben

1930 — Sept. 17, 2013

DUNCAN — Vern David Buben, 82, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Kodiak Island Providence Medical Center with his wife by his side.

Born 1930 in Marlow, to Louis M. and the late Pearl Workman Buben, he grew up in Duncan, one of 11 children with Louis and Myra Buben.

Vern served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1953, aboard the USS Jason during the Korean conflict as a Class “A” Metal Smith.

He was an exceptional man who enjoyed his work as a skilled fabricator, weldor and pipefitter. He especially liked ornamental iron. Vern worked across the nation prior to settling in Alaska in 1970.

Before moving from Anchorage to Kodiak full time in 1982, he worked as rig weldor for various drilling companies on the North Slope, Tyonek, and on the Cook Inlet platforms. He was owner/operator of Buben Welding in Kodiak where he greatly enjoyed the opportunities of fishing and wildlife viewing. He loved living on the Island, and when asked if he would consider relocating to the Lower 48 after retirement, Vern quipped with his well-known grin, “…and leave paradise?”

Vern is survived by his beloved wife, Mary DeKubber Buben of Kodiak; sons: Richard of Oregon, Ronald of Wasilla, Alaska, and David of Shelton, Wash.; daughters: Susan Corinth of Anchorage, Jennifer Hopper of North Pole and Rebecca Buben of Chicksha. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph, of Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces and friends.

Vern was pre-deceased by his wife, Carolyn in 1972.

Memorial service were Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Kodiak Funeral Chapel. Family wishes to thank with deep appreciation all those who have expressed condolences. Others wishing to send their sympathies to the family can use P.O. Box 2310 Kodiak, AK 99615.

    Twyla was born Feb. 20, 1937, in Duncan, to Willard and Ruth Tinkle and died April 16, 2014, after a brief illness. Twyla lived her entire life in the Duncan area.

    Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.
