Sherman Dowl Roden

June 5, 1939 — Nov. 24, 2013

DUNCAN — Sherman Dowl Roden passed away at the age of 74 on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, in Arlington, Texas, where he resided.

There will be no services or ceremonies. Alpine Funeral Home of Fort Worth, Texas handled the arrangements. His children and their spouses will travel to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev. on Friday, Dec. 13 for a “Celebration of Life” in his honor.

Memorials: The family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.

Sherman was born on June 5, 1939, to Norman and Rosie Roden in Comanche. He graduated from Comanche High School in 1957. He married Betty Adams on Nov. 30, 1962. He served in the National Guard in 1962 and the Army Reserves from 1962-1968.

He was a sales manager for Surplus City, Crutcher’s Western Wear, Whitney Hunt and K-Star Feed over the years. He was an avid rodeo fan and had a special gift with training horses. He loved spending time watching his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in the arena.

His family will remember his love of playing dominos, country dancing, watching western movies, telling a good joke to make others laugh and most of all his honesty and kindness shown towards others.

The family would like to express thanks to the manager, Abena and all the staff of Avalon Senior Care Residential in Arlington, Texas, where he resided; David Green, M.D. of Arlington, Texas; and the nurses of Angel Hands Hospice in Arlington, Texas, who took such loving care of him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Norman and Rosie Roden.

Sherman is survived by his daughter, Lisa Fitzgerald and husband Daren of Arlington, Texas, his son Kevin Roden and wife Debby of Kingfisher; grandchildren, Kristin Poynor and husband Tres of Bridgeport, Texas, Jagr Roden and Demi Roden, both of Kingfisher; great-grandchild, Gavin Poynor of Bridgeport, Texas; brother Paul Roden and wife Cora of Comanche; sister Patsy Roberson of Duncan and sister Sheron Skaggs of Comanche.

Don’t bring me flowers when I am dead, come see me today, while I’m sick in bed. Don’t cry for me, when I’m no longer here, come smile with me, no need for tears.

Don’t try to remember how I used to be, come by today and you can see. Make good use of time, while I’m still around, don’t wait for tomorrow, when I’m in the ground.

And don’t give me a funeral fit for a king, the day I die everyone should sing.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
