Ashton Vernon Jones, 92, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, at his home in Marlow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Jorgenson officiating and Steve Mixon providing the eulogy. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow.
“Jones” was born Thursday, June 9, 1921, in Hastings, to Samuel McCarter and Myrtle Sedelia Henderson Jones. Jones was raised in Marlow and attended Mount Pleasant School.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during World War II. Jones lived in California for 40 years, where he was a foreman of a grape vineyard.
On April 24, 1942, he married Lelia Fay Childress. She preceded him in death.
In 1985, Jones moved back to Marlow. He married Gleola Cowley Wortham on Dec. 5, 1987, in Marlow.
After returning to Marlow, Jones spent his time ranching, working his land, gardening and mowing. He enjoyed growing roses and tinkering with small engines. Jones loved spending time with his family. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife, Gleola Jones of the home; sons: Greg Wortham and wife Dena, Reagan Wortham, all of Marlow; daughters: Dee Calvert of Marlow, Trisha Little and husband Eddie of Ada; nine grandchildren: Kerri Matheny and husband Gunar, Brea VanKirk and husband Brian, Brooke Hall and husband Ryan, Jensan Wortham, Shea Wortham, Craig Calvert, Trey McCurley, Cole McCurley, Cruise McCurley; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Jones was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Leonard Ashton Jones; three brothers: Tobe, Buck and Paul Jones; two sisters: Juanita Lokey and Dorothy Watkins.
Pallbearers will be Craig Calvert, Shea Wortham, Trey McCurley, Cole McCurley, Cruise McCurley, Billy Sam Watkins. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Curtis, Paul Perrigo, Eddie Lamb.
