Pierce Robert Stevens

Sept. 18, 1918 — Sept. 11, 2013

DUNCAN — Pierce Robert Stevens, 94, of Duncan, passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, 2013, in Lawton.

Pierce was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Duncan, to Joe and Frances Stevens. Pierce married Cannie G. Cranford on Oct. 26, 1940, in Paducah, Texas. He and his bride moved to Glendale, Calif., where he worked in the aircraft industry rigging flight controls for the Lockheed P38 Lighting fighter aircraft. He then joined the US Army and fought in the Philippines where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received.

After an honorable discharged from the US Army, he worked at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, Calif. In 1961, Pierce moved his family back to Oklahoma, where he established a small business. Early in the 1970s, he worked for the City of Duncan, as a lake ranger for Lake Fuqua.

After his retirement in May of 1981, they moved to Meridian. Pierce enjoyed and loved to raise his horses throughout his life.

During his retirement he researched and built two authentic stagecoaches. They both could be seen at most every local parade. It was Pierce’s plan to build a horse-drawn hearse to be used for his funeral but couldn’t be completed due to his failing health.

Pierce is survived by his son, Jerry Stevens of Oklahoma City; daughter, Shirley and her husband Tim Helton of Duncan; grandchildren: Shad Stevens and Shelley Wallace of  Boise, Idaho, Chase Stevens and Erin Stevens of Weatherford, Scott Helton of Tulsa, and Holly Rofofson of Norman; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Bessie Carroll of Brea, Calif., and Edna Thompson of Ruidoso, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.

Pierce is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Cannie Stevens; parents, Joe and Frances Stevens; son, Robert W. Stevens; a brother and four sisters.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, in the chapel at Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan, with the Rev. Tracy L. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Duncan Cemetery with military honors presented by the Stephen County Honor Guard.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
