Andy Cary Jr.

June 30, 1922 - June 30, 2014

MARLOW — Andy Cary Jr., 92, left this life peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2014, in his home in Duncan. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at New Hope Baptist Church West with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating.  Burial will be at the Duncan Cemetery with military honors provided by the Stephens County Honor Guard.  Services are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends in a celebration of life on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Andy Cary Jr. was born on June 30, 1922 in Marlow to Mr. Andy Franklin Cary, Sr. and Ida Mae (Calhoun) Cary. He and his family moved to Duncan when he was in the second grade. He went to grade school at Lee Elementary, where he would later become a teacher and principal. Upon his retirement from Duncan Public Schools, after 37 years of service, the school was renamed in his honor.  However at Andy’s request, the name remained Robert E. Lee Elementary because it was Robert E. Lee when he attended there. As Andy continued his schooling, he became a member of the National Honor Society and had an enthusiasm for all sports at Duncan High School. He excelled and lettered in basketball, baseball, football and track. He was awarded a full track scholarship to Oklahoma University where he set state records in the 880.

He always said he was glad he was the fastest runner in the state because he caught the most beautiful girl in Stephens County to marry, his beloved Virginia.  They were married for 62 years as of Feb. 16, 2014.  While studying at OU, Andy enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II in Japan. He was honored to serve his country, becoming an Ensign, and enjoying the training he received during that time in his life. He loved to tell about his experiences in the United States Navy.  When he returned to OU he finished his Bachelor’s degree in Education and his Masters in School Administration. He returned to Duncan and went to work painting houses for many years in Duncan, even after starting as a teacher of math and science at Woodrow Wilson in 1953. He met and courted Virginia and they first saw each other at the bowling alley while on dates with other people. They married in February 1952. He continued teaching and moonlighted painting houses. Everyone wanted Andy to paint their house and he did most of them.  He became an assistant principal in 1956 at Duncan Jr. High School. Mark Allen Cary, their son was born in May, 1953. Later, Ginger Diane was born on Father’s Day, June 20, 1960. He loved teaching the kids and as a principal, he loved mentoring teachers as well. His final 18 years as principal was at Lee, and, upon his retirement, his daughter, Ginger, became a teacher there.

Andy was an avid bowler and bowled at least three perfect games that we know of. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Bowlers Hall of Fame and the Duncan Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He was very driven at everything he set out to do and thought that anything worth doing was worth doing well. He received many medals, ribbons and trophies in bowling and track.

He loved people. He enjoyed seeing former students, colleagues, and bowlers and always had a friendly smile and a genuine care and concern for others. He received many letters of admiration from former students and teachers who worked with him. He loved his family and friends and would go over and beyond to do all he could to help them. If you knew Andy, you respected him. His family was proud to call him a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church West and loved winning the prize on Father’s Day the past two years for being the oldest father in attendance. He lived his life in such an honorable way that anyone could see Christ in his daily walk. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.  The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Chisholm Trail Home Health Care and Hospice and to Carolyn Knight his caregiver, for their love and care shown to him.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
