Cecil Lawrence Wright was born April 23, 1934 in rural Grady County to Henry E. and Nancy Ora (Eslick) Wright. He passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in Velma at the age of 80.

Cecil married Peggy Harden on Oct. 14, 1953 and to this union were six sons. Later Cecil married Teri Matthews on Jan. 11, 1983 in Gainesville, Texas and two sons were born to this marriage.

He worked every position on a drilling rig and for many companies. He was a driller and tool pusher for many of those years. Before retiring in 2005 he was a superintendent and consultant. Upon his retirement he made his home in Bridge Creek, Okla., but moved back to Velma to be closer to family when his health began to fail.

Cecil loved to garden, raising lots of vegetables and canning as long as his health allowed.  Dancing was another hobby he enjoyed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; two sons, Thomas Roy and Ricky Dean; and a sister, Faye Belben.

Survivors include his sons: Michael Ratliff, Cecil L. Wright, Jr. and his wife, Barbara Daniel Wright and his wife, Katie all of Shawnee, Lewis Allen Wright and his wife, Rita, of Springfield, Mo., Landon and Shawn Wright of Velma, five brothers: Jerry Wright and his wife, Cindy, of Abilene, Texas, Thomas B. Wright of Stemford, Texas, Leon Wright and his wife, Shirley, of Bailey, Okla., Richard Wright and his wife, Jannette, of Countyline, Okla. and Wayne Wright and his wife, Ollie, of Velma, 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
