James “Jim” Roger Cavel, 67, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at his home in Marlow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the First Baptist Church, with Dr. Joe Ligon officiating. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow.
Jim was born Monday, April 2, 1945, in Carmi, Ill., to J.H. and Thelma Bandy Cavel. At the age of six weeks, Jim moved with his parents to Marlow, where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Marlow High School in 1964. He was always proud to tell everyone he was from Marlow.
Jim married Ronda Clemons of Vici, on Dec. 27, 1965, in Akin, S.C., while he was in Army specialized training at Fort Gordon, Ga. Jim served his country for two years in Korea.
Jim began his working career as a welder. After working at Halliburton, he started his own welding business. Later, he and Ronda moved to Charleston. S.C., where they both worked for a large RV dealership.
Upon returning to Marlow, Jim took his last job at the First Baptist Church, where he was a member. He always said this was the best job he ever had. Jim believed this was his way of giving back to the Lord for all of the blessings he had received.
First and foremost, Jim was a member of God's family. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, Red, Red Rose and the men’s bible study at the First Baptist Church. Jim’s early hobbies included camping and water skiing. Later, he and Ronda enjoyed traveling, visiting museums, antique malls, car shows and flea markets.
Survivors include his wife, Ronda Cavel of the home; two sons: Dean Cavel and wife Gina, and Andy Cavel, both of Marlow; granddaughter, Taylor Cavel of Marlow; grandson, Nicolas Cavel of Marlow.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Honorary pallbearers are Gerald Cullum, Steve Mixon, Lawrence Gee, Bob Hill, Don Hulsey, Phil Baughn, Jim Pryor, J.R. Patterson and Trumon Cox.
