Billy Joe ‘Brother Bill’ Florez

Nov. 20, 1929 — Jan. 30, 2014

DUNCAN — Billy Joe “Brother Bill” Florez, 84, of Duncan, and longtime area minister, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Billy Rowell and Mike Johnston officiating. Burial will follow, with military honors, at Fairlawn Cemetery, Comanche, under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Billy was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Anadarko, to Floyd and Cora Mae Lovett Florez. He married Joyce Dixon on July 7, 1950, in Clayton, N.M. She preceded him in death Nov. 17, 1997.

Billy was a proud American, serving in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, and in the Army Reserves until his Honorable Discharge in 1960. During his time of duty, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Billy was employed by ODOT as a mechanic supervisor, but his true job in life was to serve his Lord. He served as a Baptist pastor for more than 40 years at Mountain Grove,  Countryside, Cox City, Corum, Hastings, Ratliff City and retiring from Grace Baptist Church, Duncan. Billy was passionate about his church activities and sharing his faith with others. He lived and served the Christian life. He was a member of Amvets and the Mullins Baptist Association.

Billy is survived by two daughters: Kimberly Rowell and husband Billy of Duncan, and Lynette Carter of Lawton; three grandchildren: Chris Rowell and wife Ginger, Ryan Rowell and wife Jamie, and Jennifer Titus and husband Jonathan; five great-grandchildren: Brooklyn Rowell, Olivia Rowell, Christian Rowell, Addison Rowell and Lylah Grace Titus; five sisters: Dorothy Landers and husband R.L. of Mineral Wells, Texas, Margaret Duncan of Oklahoma City, June Gibson and husband Les of Williamston, Mich., Patricia White of Duncanville, Texas, and Sandra Frazier and husband Don of Elmore City; and a host of other family, church family and close friends.

Billy was also preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be John Croy, Dub Bohannon, Mark Marine, David Owen, Micah Simmons and Kenneth Spigner.
