Robert W. ‘Bobby’ Richardson III

Jan. 30, 1936 — July 3, 2013

DUNCAN — Robert W. “Bobby” Richardson III (Retired Pharmacist), 77, of Duncan, died Wednesday July 3, 2013 in Duncan.

Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tracy L. Wilson officiating. Services are under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Bobby was born Jan. 30, 1936, in Duncan, to Robert W. Richardson Jr. and Lois Evelyn Frie Richardson. He attended Duncan Public Schools and graduated in 1954. At DHS, he was a member of the 1953 and 1954 Oklahoma State Championship golf teams and was individual champion in 1954. He was a member of the State and National Honor Societies, served as president of the Student Council and was voted “Outstanding Senior Boy.” He started the first Jazz Band and spearheaded the formation of an Intramural basketball league.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, served on the Student Senate and was president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a 4-year letterman for the OU golf team, won 2 Big 6 Championships and was runner up once. He finished in the Individual Top 10 three years and represented OU in 3 NCAA Tournaments. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy.

Bobby married Shirley Oaks on June 24, 1961, and son, Randall “Randy” Wesley was born Oct. 13, 1964.

After college, he returned to Duncan to be a partner with his father at R&S Drug, started in 1945. He was instrumental in adding a third store to the chain in 1978. He was taught to take care of the customer and serving people as a Pharmacist has always been his calling.

He served six months active duty in the Army and 7 years in the National Guard in the medical unit.

Bobby was a pillar of the community of Duncan. His many civic and professional affiliations include: Duncan Public Schools Board Member 15 years (president four times); Duncan Public Schools Foundation four years; Duncan Jaycees 12 years (helped found the Jaycee Auction); Duncan Chamber of Commerce (member more than 40 years); Duncan Regional Hospital (board member for six years and task force for physician recruitment); Chisholm Trail Hospice volunteer; Security National Bank board 20 years; Foreman Prairie House (vice president and board); Oklahoma Main Street Program board member 1976-2008 (president six times); Duncan Rotary Club member 40 years (past president, piano player and song leader); Elk?s Lodge member and chairman of scholarship committee; Duncan 1993 Centennial Committee president; Duncan Civic Capers; Duncan Chapter of Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (helped form in 1973 and in 1980 Lawton and Duncan Chapters merged into The Southwest Pride; his quartet, The Vocal Orchestration Corporation and won various quartet competitions including the Southwest District Championship in 1981; Travel and Tourism Committee of Duncan; United Way team captain; OU Pharmacy Alumni Associations member and served as president 2002-03; Oklahoma Pharmacy Association (OPHA) district 6 president numerous times, state president and hosted the state convention in 1995; was soloist for many weddings and memorial services.

His awards and honors include: Duncan Chamber of Commerce Free Enterprise Award, 1978; Duncan Chamber of Commerce Community Improvement Award, 1987; Duncan Athletic Hall of Fame, 1990; Duncan Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year Award,” 1992; Duncan Jaycees Boss of the Year Award, 1990; 1964 Oklahoma Men’s State Amateur Golf Tournament, 2nd Place; Duncan Elk’s Club Championship, won from 1953-1965; Bing Crosby National Pro-Am Golf Tournament, invited to play in 1972 and 1973; 2008 Barbershopper of the Year; University of Oklahoma Pharmacy School, 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award and Duncan Education Foundation Award, 2010. Jan. 21, 2012, Bobby and Shirley received the Diamond Collar Award in recognition of their years of volunteer work and contribution to the Stephens County Humane Society.

Longtime member of First United Methodist Church and the choir, the FUMC choir, to honor his work and dedication to the music ministry, established the “Bobby Richardson Music Fund” on Dec. 23, 2012. For many years he led the men’s choir on Mother’s Day and at Christmas, recruiting men from the congregation to join the regular choir members.

He enjoyed ballroom dancing having belonged to the Starliter’s Dance Club for more than 40 years.

For more than 40 years some old friends have played poker once a month. They lovingly refer to these evenings as “prayer meetings.”

A special thank you to friend and caregiver, Tim Stroud and the family would like to recognize his special caregivers at the Sterling House and Country Club Care nursing home.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; son, Randy of Edmond; and grandson, Dima Sitnik of Edmond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Lois Richardson; and his sister, Lois Ann Richardson.

Honorary bearers are Thomas J. Jones, Jr., Dr. Robert Schick, Dr. Jimmy Jones, Ed Apple, Bud Burger, Phil Leonard, John Ray Green and Jerry Davis.
