William Russell Young

1921-2013

DUNCAN — Mr. Wm. Russell Young passed away Friday, April 26, 2013, from a sudden heart attack at home.

He and his wife, Anna, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. He was born in Canon Creek, Tenn., and learned outdoor skills at an early age.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in South Pacific, enduring combat in New Guinea, Burma, the Philippines, and Okinawa. After the war he joined the U.S. Marine reserves, and received an honorable discharge following the Korean War.

He worked for AT&T for 30 years, where he eventually became manager of government communications in Washington, DC.

Following that retirement, he worked as a senior consultant for the Stanford Research Institute for several years. He met and worked with eight U.S. Presidents and received numerous accolades, including the DOD Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

He lunched with J. Edgar Hoover and assisted him in many classified projects, all in service to the country he loved.

He was most proud of the work he was able to do through the World Bible School, and played a large role in leading many souls to Christ. He helped establish congregations of the Lord’s Church in several places, including Australia and Virginia.

He loved life in every way, especially fishing from daylight to dark on a creek bank; watching boxing (he was Tennessee’s Middleweight champion as a young man); and supporting his favorite baseball teams. He loved history and archaeology, becoming quite an authority in both areas.

He loved to read, filling his home with numerous volumes, and even writing and publishing his own book, ‘Ma Bell,’ a history of AT&T accomplishments and creations throughout the 20th Century. Most of all he loved God with all his heart, mind and spirit.

There is no doubt that he shares paradise now with Christ Jesus.

Russ had two brothers, Lowell and JR, both deceased, and two sisters, YuVenne and Arlene who live in Tennessee.

His son and daughter-in-law John and Marlene Young live in Duncan. He has three grandchildren, Scott Russell Young of Tulsa, Brandon Douglas Young of Mesa, Ariz., and Bethany Anne Benes, with son-in-law Pete Benes of Ada; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Brook Benes and Morgan Ray Benes of Ada, who never failed to delight and invigorate him.

He also leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Anna, the dearest pearl of his life, his childhood sweetheart and tender companion, whom he never failed to treat with the kindest affection and deepest love.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Eastside Church of Christ, with Ron Stough officiating. A formal visitation period will be 5:30 - 7 p.m. today at Grantham’s Funeral Home.

Open viewing is available at other times. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Eastside Church of Christ Mission Fund.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
