Samuel Guinn Garrett

June 14, 1932 — Aug. 24, 2013

DUNCAN — Funeral services for Samuel Guinn Garrett will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan.

Samuel Guinn Garrett was born to William Virgil Garrett and Mary Houston Garrett on (Flag Day) June 14, 1932, in Comanche. Guinn passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in the Lawton/Fort Sill Veteran’s Center on Flowermound Road in Lawton at the age of 81 years, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Guinn grew up and attended school at Willow Point, Meridian and Comanche High School. He was the sixth of nine children, and his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends were very important to him.

Guinn married Mary Carol Rains of Duncan on April 27, 1952, in Henrietta, Texas, and after a brief stint in the United States Army, they returned to Stephens County to make their home and raise their girls: Debra, Sandy and Carrie in Meridian.

Guinn began working for Sunray DX and continued at the refinery under Sun Oil and TOSCO companies until retirement when they moved to Duncan. Although retired, Guinn continued to raise cattle and help his girls with all their unending projects until poor health prevented him from continuing.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mary Garrett; his brothers: James Worth Garrett and wife “Pat” Garrett, Lyndel Garrett and his wife Irene Garrett Walton, Dwight Garrett; his sister, Wanda Whitney and her husband Earl Whitney; brother-in-law, Wayne Hunt; and nephew, Timothy Garrett.

Guinn is survived by his wife, Carol Garrett of Duncan; his daughters: Debra Ely and husband Myron of Pauls Valley, Sandra Gladd and husband Bill of Duncan, and Carrie Garrett of Duncan; his grandsons: Caleb Gladd and wife Lesley, Cameron Gladd and wife Shelby, and James Morgan Ely; great-grandchildren: Mallory Daugherty, Caleb Ross Gladd, Charli Rose Gladd and Gunner David Gladd; his sisters: Mildred Carroll of Mansfield, Texas, Doris Umsted and husband Lee of Dickson, Tenn., and Carol Hunt of Duncan; and a brother, Terry Garrett and wife Lois of Duncan; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  

Pallbearers will be Terry Garrett, Myron Ely, Bill Gladd, Caleb Gladd, Cameron Gladd, and Morgan Ely.

Interment will follow at the New Velma Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan from 6 to 8 p.m.
