DUNCAN — On Saturday, July 27, 2013, Hugh Michael (Mike) Simmons’ battle with cancer came to an end. Mike passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family and supported by his many close friends.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31 at New Hope Baptist Church West with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of the Don Granthan Funeral Home.

Mike was born on Aug. 31, 1941, to Bernard and Ella Simmons in Duncan. Mike’s father Bernard was killed in 1944 during World War II and is buried in Europe in the American Military Cemetery in Luxembourg. Ella later married Jessie Baugh in Mike’s early teenage years.

Mike attended Duncan Public Schools, graduating from Duncan High School in 1960. Following graduation, Mike attended a technical college in Oklahoma City, where his passion for electronics took hold. Mike began working for Halliburton in the Electronic Research and Development Group in 1966, where he worked for 28 years. Mike also met the love of his life, Mary Martin, in 1966 and they later wed in 1969.

Mike and Mary had their first child, Trina Simmons, in 1972.  Their second child, Craig Simmons, followed in 1976.

Following his long career with Halliburton, Mike began working for Duncan Public Schools in 1995, where he was employed up to the time of his death. Mike enjoyed working, but mostly enjoyed the many close relationships he made throughout his years at Halliburton and Duncan Public Schools. Mike earned the nickname Mikey from many of his co-workers.

Throughout both his personal and professional life, Mike was known as a problem solver. Presented with any issue, he could engineer a solution. This vast knowledge and problem solving ability will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and co-workers.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary Simmons; father, Bernard Simmons; mother Ella Simmons (Baugh); step-father, Jessie Baugh; step-brothers Robert Baugh and Jerry Baugh; and step-sisters Della (Baugh) Lesperance and Mary (Baugh) Henderson.

Survivors include daughter Trina Sweat and her husband David Sweat of Duncan, son Craig Simmons and his wife Leanna Simmons of Spring, Texas; grandchildren Maci Alexander, Abby Simmons, and Michael Simmons; a cousin, Audrie Kensey and her husband Hugh Kensey of Oklahoma City; and step-brother Chester (Chet) Baugh and his wife Val Baugh of Lake Elsinore, Calif.

Pallbearers for the service will be Jackie Martin, Billy Martin, Grant Martin, John Hopper, James Wooten, Roy Throneberry Jr., and Gary Vierra.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Duncan Regional Hospital Health Foundation - Cancer Center.
