AMARILLO, Texas — —
Larry Joe “Skip” Johnson, 73, of Amarillo, Texas, died Friday, July 26, 2013.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, July 29, in Velma Cemetery in Velma. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Larry was born Aug. 4, 1939, in Ranger, Texas, to Almer Lee and Chloe Johnson. He graduated from Velma-Alma High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
After retiring from the Air Force, he then spent 20 years as a nuclear technologist in the Department of Energy complex at Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, N.M., and retired in 2004, from the Pantex Plant in Amarillo. He served as mayor of Bishop Hills, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his brother-in-law, and his previous wife, Jennie Lee.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Donna Carroll Johnson; two daughters: Kelly Johnson-Mitchell of San Antonio, Texas, and Lori Jobmann and husband Carl of Ortonville, Mich.; a step-daughter, Brandi McLaws and husband David of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Judy Oedewaldt of Harrah; a brother, Terry Johnson and wife Brenda of Velma; two brothers-in-law: Fred Carroll and wife Lisa of Broken Arrow, and Nicky Carroll and wife Nancy of Velma; a sister-in-law, Jil Roberts and husband Roy, also of Velma; nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; best friends: Wes Estill of Albuquerque, Howard Bailey, Jack Covington and Mike McCann, all of Amarillo; and numerous other family and friends.
Family suggests memorials be to Disabled Veterans, 6010 W Amarillo Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or Vietnam Veteran’s of America, Chapter 297, P.O. Box 33674, Amarillo, TX, 79120-3674.
Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Amarillo.
