Bruce A. Blackman


Funeral service for Bruce A. Blackman, 93, of Duncan, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at First Christian Church of Duncan. The Rev. Arnold Nelson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. the same day in Hillcrest Cemetery at Weleetka.
Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the funeral home.
Bruce moved on to his next life on Saturday, April 6, 2013, after brief hospitalization at Duncan Regional Hospital.
Born to Cecil and Ruby Blackman, Bruce married Dorothy Atterberry in July 1945, at Weleetka’s First Christian Church.
He served in the Army Signal Corps during WWII as a Radar Range Officer across multiple theaters of war. Post-war, he was reactivated to assist early U.S. Space Program rocket research at White Sands Missile Range and Holloman AFB. After completing his military service, the remainder of his working years as a Registered Professional Engineer he engaged in energy production research at Dowell, Lane Wells, Well Surveys, Otis Engineering, and finally, Halliburton.
He retired from Halliburton’s Electronic Research and Development Labs in Duncan after more than 20 years of service and multiple U.S. Patents issued in his name.
In retirement, he and Dorothy were active world travelers, visiting some part of every continent during these years. Bruce was active life-long in the Disciples of Christ denomination of the Christian Church, serving a variety of church board leadership roles and always a devout choir member. He loved singing, and was a member of Duncan’s First Christian Church choir for more than 50 continuous years. For many years he has been active in other community-service activities, too, including Christians Concerned, Texoma Christian Camp, fine-arts support, and a host of national-scope humanitarian service groups.
Bruce is survived by two children: Barry Blackman and wife Barbra of Schertz, Texas, and Susan Blackman Rehfeld and husband Mike of Grand Prairie, Texas. Bruce has a surviving brother, David Blackman of McAlester. He has four grandchildren: Brooke Novales, Burke Blackman, Barron Blackman and David Rehfeld, plus four great-grandchildren: Daniel, Christopher, Brooklyn and Matthew.
