Jerrel Gene Creekmore

March 21, 1928 — April 5, 2013

DUNCAN — Jerrel Gene Creekmore, 85, of Duncan passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Reggie Creekmore and Mark Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gene was born March 21, 1928, in Morris to Roy R. and Elvessa (Wood) Creekmore.

He was a baseball player from a young age, who mainly played outfield. His combination of speed, arm strength and skills at the plate afforded him many opportunities to play at the minor league level. His baseball skills eventually led to his career at Halliburton, where he took a job and played for their baseball team. Gene worked at Halliburton until his retirement in 1986.

Gene was a fast pitch softball player after his baseball career.  He found a home on the infield with his quick hands and great arm. He was inducted into the ASA softball Hall of Fame, where he was presented for induction by M.T. Hines in 1991.

Gene had a passion for the outdoors and especially archery.  He was a founding member of the Duncan Archery Club. He harvested the first archery deer in Stephens County in November of 1968.  He shared his knowledge and skills with his kids and grandchildren and many share his passion for the outdoors.

Some of his most cherished times were spent with his friends and family fishing as well as hunting. Beavers Bend and Broken Bow Lake were among his favorite destinations.

Gene is suvived by his wife of 63 years, Nita, of the home; three children: Debbie Stearman and husband Al of Eufaula, Reggie Creekmore and wife Pam and Dena Creekmore of Yelm, Wash.; five grandchildren: Mark Smith and wife Lacey, Josh Creekmore and wife Kim, Sara Adkins and husband Travis, Micah Creekmore and wife Anna of Oklahoma City and Yancey Creekmore of Yelm, Wash.; and six great-grandchildren: Matt and Morgan Smith of Harrah, Malachi and Ethan Creekmore and Garrett and Raylee Blackburn.

“Granddad” as he was known by many who loved him most, was a kind, fun man with a big heart and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Jack Creekmore and O’Dell Creekmore.

Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Josh Creekmore, Micah Creekmore, Travis Adkins, Paul Arnett and Bob Harper.

Kenneth Hall will serve as an honorary bearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
