Walter Howard ‘Bud’ Brown

April 18, 1922 — March 26, 2014

COMANCHE — Walter Howard Brown, better known as “Bud” to all who knew him, a long-time resident of Comanche, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 26, 2014, in Lawton.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Comanche First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, under direction of Comanche Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.

He was born April 28, 1922, in Addington, to Jim Blaine and Bessie Schnelgros Brown. He and Sue Thompson were united in marriage 1943 in Kentucky. Bud was a professional rodeo contestant, as both a steer wrestler and bull rider. They spent a few years in California where Bud worked drilling water wells. They eventually settled in Comanche where they became very active members of the Comanche business community.

Bud was a rodeo cowboy, rancher, oilfield worker, pipefitter, butcher, grocery store owner, decorating store owner, insurance agent, real estate agent and home builder. He was successful in all of these endeavors, many of which he pursued at the same time. He was a workhorse and was always “steady in the races.”

When saying goodbye after a conversation with someone, he would try to have the last words: “Call if you need help.” And in his case, he actually did mean it.

In his spare time Bud loved to hunt and fish. After retirement he and Sue spent many weeks camping and fishing in both New Mexico and Arkansas. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Sue of the home; a son, James Howard Brown and wife Marsha, Phoenix, Ariz; a daughter, Carole J. Brown and her husband Tommy Gunn, Lawton; three grandsons: James Steven Brown, Jeffrey B. Brown and Joseph C. Brown, all of Phoenix; two granddaughters: Susan Brown of Phoenix, and Lauren Morley, of Ellicott City, Md.; three great granddaughters; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bessie; and a brother, Earl Brown.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
