Junior Harris

Oct. 1, 1968-May 26, 2014

DUNCAN — Junior Harris, 45, of Duncan and former resident of Lawton,  passed away Monday, May 26, 2014, in an auto accident in Duncan.

  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the Simmons Center in Duncan. Burial will be at the Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin,  with military honors at 2 p.m.

Services are under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home and will be officiated by Pastor Arnold Nelson, Pastor Roderick Jackson, Pastor Tyrone Turner, and Pastor Michael D. Logan.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Junior was born on October 1, 1968, in Rocky Mount, N.C., to Rebecca Harris and John Junior Jenkins and also raised by Jesse and Odessa Harris.

Junior graduated from James B. Hunt High School in Wilson, N.C., and received a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and his Master’s Degree from AIU as well as multiple certifications in leadership.

 Junior was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army for eight years, reaching the rank of sergeant; while in the Army Junior met his wife Anna Lois Hawthorne in Sierra Vista, Ariz.,  and the two married there on June 2, 1990. 

Junior worked as the executive director for the Simmons Center in Duncan for seven years, accepting the positionin 2008 when he was the membership services director at the YMCA in Lawton, where he helped start the Youth Achievers, serving as its director for at-risk youth. 

  Junior was proud to be an active member of his community, serving as co-chair for the United Way in the Lawton; he was a member of the Lawton Kiwanis and a member of the Rotary Club in Duncan,  where he enjoyed being the camp director at the RYLA Youth Camp. He coached boy’s football at Woodland Hills Elementary and Eisenhower Junior High School in Lawton. He also substituted as a teacher for McArthur High School in Lawton and was a member of the VFW Post 1193 and Masonic Lodge Rising Star #18.

In his free time Junior loved to play golf. He was a member of Lawton-Duncan golf family, Duncan Golf & Tennis Club and Lawton-Ft Sill Golf Association. He also enjoyed other

 sports, coaching, mentoring, barbecuing, joking, encouraging and empowering others, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

  He was especially proud of his sons and his two grandsons.  Junior received his faith at an early age at Roundtree Missionary Baptist Church in Wilson, NC.

Junior is survived by his wife of 24 years Anna Harris of the home, sons, Javon David Harris and DeVante Jamaal Harris of Lawton; siblings, Vicky Harris, Diane (Jerome) Harris Johnson, Patricia (Tony) Dobbins, Beatrice Usher, Donnie (Brenda) Ray Harris, Sylvia (Charles) Sherrod, Jesse Harris, Willie Harris, Deryl (Gwen) Harris, Tracy (Anthony) Cannady, Timothy (Beverly) Harris; grandchildren, Jeremyah Factor, Carter Harris; Godchildren, Porscha (Pork Chop) Martin, Courtney Devot, Jordan Allen, and his  in-laws Zettie (Arthur) Mitchell, his parents and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers and flowers girls for the service will be Members of the Masonic Family Rising Star # 18

Honorary pallbearers will be Timothy Harris, Willie Harris, Deryl Harris, Jesse Harris, Donnie Ray Harris, Selwyn Hawthorne, David Hawthorne, Terry Phillips, Dave Ransom, Derek Sing, Rod Fisher, Gerald Holly, Malcolm Johnson, Leonard Maggio Jr., Albert Mayon III, Dewell Brewer, James Coley, Dorian J. Williams, Lewis P. Jones, Jessie Potts, Elgin Lawrence Traylor, Malden Smith and James Short.

The family asks that memorial donations be made in Junior’s name to Arvest Bank in Duncan.

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
