Alvie William Rogers Oct. 6, 2013

DUNCAN — Long-time Duncan resident, Alvie William Rogers passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, in Hospice of Wichita Falls, Texas, after a long illness. He was 95.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, Duncan. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

His life could be summed up in what he told a young drug addict he and his wife Verna  were helping several years ago. He said, “I will stake all my reputation, all my years, on the fact that the Gospel of Jesus Christ properly lived works every time for everyone.”

Alvie was well-known in the Duncan area as co-owner of Byerley-Rogers Motor Company and later, sole owner of Rogers Motor Company, selling Pontiacs, American Motors and Jeeps, from a showroom and lot on 1007 Walnut. In 1984 he sold his business to Larry Battison, who moved the dealership to the Duncan Bypass.

Alvie became a follower of Jesus Christ as a teenager during a brush arbor meeting in the Banner community of Stephens County. That decision marked his life from then on. He and his wife Verna were active in Duncan’s First Assembly of God, where Alvie’s older brother, the Rev. Haskell Rogers was senior pastor for many years.

Alvie loved to see people come to Christ, then grow in their faith. He served as the teacher for the adult Bible class for more than 20 years. He and Verna were glad to see both their sons, Jim and Bob, go into full-time Christian ministry.

While Alvie was still a car dealer, he and his wife founded a ministry called Christian Vocational Opportunity Service (CVOC). Working in close cooperation with Teen Challenge, CVOC took former addicts into the Rogers farm home on Oklahoma Highway 7, east of Duncan. In addition to giving them additional training from the Bible, Alvie asked various local businessmen to take on the young men as apprentices, giving them opportunities to learn a trade.

When Alvie and Verna sold their car dealership in the 1980s, they joined their son Bob in working with Teen Challenge in Southern California. Alvie and Verna became directors of the Teen Challenge Women’s Center in Ventura, Calif. There they encouraged the faith and Christian growth of scores of young women with life controlling problems.

In recent years, Alvie became the prime caregiver of his wife, Verna, who had serious health issues. Finally after more than ninety years with Duncan as his hometown, Alvie and Verna moved to Wichita Falls to be near their son Bob, who is Senior Pastor at First Assembly of God Church there.

Early this past Sunday morning, Alvie went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Trudie Schaeffer Rogers; by his grandson, Christopher Rogers; by three brothers: Ernest, Cecil and Haskell Rogers; and by two sisters: Ruth Rogers Vallier and Lola Rogers Edwards.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Verna Johnson Rogers of Wichita Falls; by his sisters: Lois Anglley of Stillwater, Dorothy Smith of Tulsa, and Reba Shaw of Claremore; by his sons and daughters-in-law: Jim and Janice Rogers of Lindale, Texas, and Bob and Becky Rogers of Wichita Falls; by four grandchildren: Angie Rogers Fleming of Whitehouse, Texas, Jeff Rogers of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Joel Rogers, also of Kailua-Kona, and Jonathan Rogers of Orebro, Sweden; and by nine great-grandchildren.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
