J.B. Smith

June 2, 1938 -- June 4, 2014

DUNCAN — J.B. Smith passed from this life on Wednesday June 4 at his home in Duncan.

He was born June 2, 1938 in Marlow to John Barney and Lucinda (Traphagen) Smith and attended Marlow Schools until he joined the U.S. Marines one week after his seventeenth birthday. J.B. married Carlene McCarley on March 22, 1957 and to their union were born Kimmie, Jimmie, and Terri. J.B. married Alice Blodgett on June 6, 1974 in Wichita Falls, Texas and their marriage produced a son, Jason.

Throughout his life, J.B. had several careers, including pipefitter, construction worker, mechanic, and business owner, but he spent most of his adult life in law enforcement and real estate. His greatest joy in life was the joy of others. He was well-known for his generosity and his desire to put smiles on those around him, handing out chocolate, newspapers, gold dollars, and cookies, and other random acts of kindness.

He strived to live his life based on his faith in Jesus Christ and the principles he found in the Bible and Freemasonry.  He was a member of Duncan Lodge #60 and the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, as well as a member of the Ancient and Benevolent Order of the Red, Red Rose. J.B. was also a member for many years of the Guthrie Scottish Rite.

J.B. was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Merle Miller, Mabel Whitener, Ruth Collier; and brothers Charles McWhorter and Harold Smith. He was also preceded by his his in-laws, Jay and Jenny Jay Blodgett, sister-in-law Nita Chupp, and nephew Brian Chupp.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; daughters Kimmie Williams and her husband, Chuck; Terri Spencer and husband, Brian; sons Jimmie Smith and Jason Smith and his wife, Amanda; grandchildren Jennifer Smith Cruz, Zachariah Johnson, Justin Hanmore, Jamie Smith Jones, Aaron Spencer, Jessica Smith Dauphinee, Alicia Williams Vigil, Zachary Spencer, Jimi Smith, Ellenette Welborn, Gabi Lopez, Sofia Lopez, Melanie Branca and many, many others who knew him as Papa or Grandpa and who each had a special place in his heart and believed they were his favorite. He is also survived by four sisters: Sammie Black, Marilea Bible, Joyce Ware, and Marcella Cearlock; a daughter-in-law Gail Smith, and a host of close friends.

Services will be at The Well on Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m. under the direction of Carter-Smart Funeral Home. It will be officiated by Rev. Arnold Nelson and Jason Smith. Interment will follow at Marlow Cemetery with military honors and masonic ceremony. Pallbearers will be Steven Simmons, Justin Hanmore, Aaron Spencer, Zachariah Johnson, Zachary Spencer, and Jay Jay Vigil.  Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Girod, Enrique Velasco, and all of the regulars from Tim’s Place Restaurant.

A celebration of life will be held at El Campesino Restaurant in Duncan on Friday, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  All friends are invited to join the family for this joyful event.
