LaVerne Qualls Hart

July 16, 1927 — Jan. 28, 2014

DUNCAN — LaVerne Qualls Hart, 86, of Duncan, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Meridian Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Arnold Nelson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

LaVerne Qualls Hart was born July 16, 1927, on her parents farm six miles east of Comanche, located near Dear Creek. She attended the Dear Creek School then went to Comanche High School. She finished her education in Duncan, when World War II started, and the family sold the farm.

She worked as a telephone operator, small grocery store checker, and worked in the Meat Department of the original Goodner’s grocery on East Main and the Humpty Dumpty store.  In March 1945, LaVerne married the handsome blue-eyed soldier Cleo James Qualls.

LaVerne and Jimmy raised their daughter Opal, who later blessed them with a grandson Jayson. Jimmy “Cleo” passed away in 1986, and LaVerne lived alone for five years, until she met the widower Billy Gene Hart. They married August 1992, in Las Vegas, Nev., with loved ones around them and a promise to grow old together.

More than anything LaVerne would prefer to be sitting on the banks of a pond or Waurika Lake fishing. She was very gracious to her family and friends with many fish fries and cookouts. Also close to her heart was going to race tracks all over the country and pulling for brother Chuck’s horses to win.

Family came first, and her sisters, Ginger and Norma, were her best friends. However, she had best friends, JoAnn Bryant, Lawana Morris and Sue Hinnon, who were as close as sisters. She loved much and tried to always look past anyone’s flaws.

Accepting the Lord Jesus in the early 1960s, LaVerne knew the Lord Jesus Christ and trusted Him. She often talked of all the times He heard and answered her prayers, especially when praying for a child.

LaVerne is survived by her second husband, Billy Gene Hart; a daughter and grandson; sisters: Norma Dana of New York, N.Y., and Ginger Page of San Diego. Calif.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Velma Taliaferro; her first love, husband Jimmy Qualls; her brothers: Charles “Chuck” Taliaferro, Jack Taliaferro, Leo Bennett “Chief” Taliaferro, Kermit Pruitt, Turner Pruitt; and her brother-in-law, Leo and his wife Blanche, and son Danny Qualls; along with Laverne’s sister-in-law, Lorene Burdete,  whom she was very close.

Family members would like to extend their gratitude to the loving family, friends and neighbors for their prayers and concerns for LaVerne.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
