DUNCAN — Marcella Kovar, 90, of Duncan, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014. in Duncan.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at the First United Methodist Church, Duncan, with the Rev. Dr. Alex Costea officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford. Service is under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the funeral home.

Marcella Royse was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Elk City, to Ben T. and Etta Faye Royse. She grew up in western Oklahoma graduating from Hammon High School, Hammon. There she met Wallace V. Kovar and they married on July 3, 1940. To this union were born her two sons: Wallace Michel and Rod L. Kovar.

In November of 1951, they moved to Duncan. In 1960, both Marcella and Michel entered Southwestern State College, earning their bachelor’s degrees in 1964. She immediately began teaching at Eakly Elementary School, Eakly, for a semester.

She returned to Duncan, where she taught for 24 years at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School before retiring in May of 1987. After retiring, it was a joy to continue keeping in contact with her former students, who she loved dearly.

She is survived by her son, Rodney L. Kovar and his wife Debbie; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her brother, Dr. Dayton Royse and his wife Brenda; a niece, Reddy Wilson; three nephews: Robert Royse, Ryan Royse, Randy Royse; and a former student whom she loved dearly, Darla Tucker.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Wallace V. Kovar; her son, Wallace Michel Kovar; two brothers: Ben Royse, Jr., Dana Royse; and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial donations be made to: The First United Methodist Church or to the Stephens County Retired Educators Association.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Alexander, Albert Dumas, Jess Wilburn, Jerry Penner, David Cantwell and Matt Cantwell. Honorary pallbearers are Warren Whittington, Joe Duncan, Josh Ammons, Jerry Davis, Ed Lowe, Jonathan Cantwell and Bill Robertson.
