The Duncan Banner
Dauwayne Harold Hays, 73, of Duncan, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at his home.
The family will have a private family memorial.
Dauwayne was born May 9, 1940, in Duncan, the son of Melvin Oscar and Naomi Elizabeth Hall Hays. He grew up in Duncan and moved with his family as migrant workers to California. He worked to help support his family during hard times.
He married and started a family before returning to Oklahoma, where he remained the rest of his life. He had many skills, including a knack for mechanics, music, and cooking. He had worked in a plywood mill, was a carpenter with Cotton Engineering, and had built and remodeled many homes and commercial buildings.
He was an excellent cabinet maker and finish carpenter. He enjoyed fishing and was well known for his ability to out-fish most anyone. He loved playing guitar and singing with friends, and working with wood. He will be remembered as a truly loving and generous man with a sometimes gruff exterior, a good father, and a true friend to many.
Survivors include two sons: Michael Dean Hays of Velma, and Glen Edward Hays of McKinleyville, Calif.; a brother, Howard Dale Hays of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters: Wanda Gale Childers of Norman, and Charlotte Kay Canon of Wayne; dear friend, Betty Stacey; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several cousins and extended family; and many other friends and loved ones.
