Lena Madeline Hagen Groff, the youngest daughter of William and Johanna Hagen, died Oct. 18, 2013, in her home in McKinney, Texas, at the age of 90.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Duncan Cemetery under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.
She was born May 3, 1923, on the family farm near Ellis, Kan. She was a 1939 graduate of Ellis High School and received her life teaching certificate from Fort Hays State College. She was a member of Tri Sigma, a national teaching sorority. She had taught school on three continents.
Lena married Clarence Ellsworth Groff on June 21, 1947, in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hays Kan. Mr. Groff’s employment with Halliburton took them many places. They lived in Ellis and Eldorado, Kan.; Bogota, Columbia; Palma Majorca, Spain; Guatemala City Guatemala; and Lima, Peru, before retiring to Duncan, in January 1980.
While in Duncan, Lena was a volunteer with the Duncan Literary Agency tutoring adults to read and write. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several social clubs.
In May 2000, she moved to McKinney, Texas, to live with her son Robert, daughter-in-law Carla and grandson Triston after surviving cancer. Lena moved with them to Jonesboro, Ark., January 2004 and back to McKinney in September 2011.
Mrs. Groff was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; youngest son, Dorian; and her seven siblings.
She is survived by her son Robert, his wife Carla, and grandson Triston.
