Betty Rae Payne

Aug. 22, 1943 — Oct. 17, 2013

DUNCAN — Betty Rae Payne went to be with her Heavenly Father on Oct. 17, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer.

A celebration of her life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Calvary Baptist Church, 12th and Elm. She donated her body via the anatomical gift program to Parker University.

Betty was born to Ray and Leola Upshaw in Britton. She graduated in 1961 in Dumas, Texas. She moved with her family to northern California in 1967, where she worked as a secretary at Richmond Export Service for several years.

She devoted to raising her four girls in a Christian home and being involved in their lives at church and in school activities. Later, she took a job as a school bus driver, PE teacher and coach of softball, basketball and volleyball at the Christian schools her daughters attended. She also enjoyed visiting San Fransisco and walking across the Golden Gate Bridge.

She returned to Oklahoma in 1980, where she was a successful business owner for more than 30 years. She loved the Lord, enjoyed reading her Bible daily and valued the time she spent with her grandchildren.

Other interests were rescuing stray animals, including her many cats, reading and taking photos of wild flowers. She had a huge heart and was kind, loving and generous to everyone she met.

Betty is survived by her husband Freddie Tilley, her four daughters Tamara Lake of Rock Springs, Wy., Tracy Payne of Boyd, Texas, Kelly Michelle of Duncan and Kimberly McDevitt of Duncan; seven grandchildren: Brian Lake, Rebecca Lake, Jeffrey Lake, Scott Payne, Jason Payne, Dustin McDevitt and Cody McDevitt; five great-grandchildren; her brother Jim Bailey of Duncan and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, David Upshaw.

Poll

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
