Sadie Bess Thomas

April 6, 1921 — March 26, 2013

MCALESTER — Sadie Bess Thomas, 91, of McAlester, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in Mitchell Minor in McAlester.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, in Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Jamie Kirkpatrick. Interment will be at Indianola Cemetery under direction of Bishop Funeral Service

Family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m., Thursday evening, March 28, 2013 at Bishop Funeral Service.

Born April 6, 1921, in Crowder, the daughter of R.C. “Dick” Blanscett and Nancy (Robinson) Blanscett. Sadie grew up in the McAlester area. She was married to Joseph “Joe” Bess on March 5, 1940. To this union four sons were born: Ray, Leon, Billy and Sam.

Sadie worked as a seamstress for Seamproof in McAlester for a number of years, retiring in 1972. Following her career, Sadie went back to school at the Vo-Tech where she received her General Education Development Diploma at the age of 66. She also attained her certification as a Nurse’s Aid and was employed by Bell’s Nursing Home for a time.

Several years after losing her husband Joe, in 1978, Sadie married Henry Thomas on Oct. 10, 1992. They shared several years together before Henry’s passing in 1998.

Sadie then made a move to Duncan, to be with her son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Kathryan. She was able to make new friends and enjoyed volunteering at the Compassion Center with their church.

Sadie had been a resident of Mitchell Manor for the past couple of years. She was a long-time member of the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church of McAlester. She will always be remembered for putting others first and was a wonderful caretaker for many.

Sadie is survived by a son, Leon Bess and his wife Kathryan of Chouteau; step-daughters: Betty Wall of Lubbock, Texas, Patricia Collins of Levelland, Texas; grandchildren: Deborah Olandese of Tulsa, Kenneth Olandese of Claremore, Jeannette Olandese of McAlester, David Olandese of Tiawah, Joey Bess of Oklahoma City, Deanna Altiamirano of Fort Smith, Ark., Misty Bess, Jody Bess and Ricky Bess all of McAlester, Chasity Wedlow of Hartshorne. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, R.C. “Dick” Blanscett and Nancy (Robinson) Blanscett; husband, Joe Bess; sons: Ray, Billy and Sam Bess; husband, Henry Thomas; sisters: Ada Blanscett, Madie Shropshire, Della Mann and Melvin Thomas; granddaughter, Raelene Bess.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Carter, David Choate, Leroy Conner, Bob Smith, Toy Wingo and Terry Plunkett. Honorary pallbearers are Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church members.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Interment will follow at the New Velma Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan from 6 to 8 p.m.
