Melvin Francis High

June 29, 1934 — Nov. 29, 2012

DUNCAN — Melvin Francis High, 78, of Duncan, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Country Club Care in Duncan.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at New Hope Baptist Church West with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Services are under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Melvin was born June 29, 1934, at Walters, to James Francis and Cora (Ginn) High. He graduated from Walters High School in 1954, and from Cameron College in 1957. He worked in the oilfield in Venezuela, and served in the U.S. Army.

Melvin married Hazel Francine Taylor, and together they lived in Dallas, Texas,  where he worked at Texas Instruments and later became a self employed jeweler. To this union were three children.

Francine preceded him in death in November of 1994, and he continued to live in Dallas, until he married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Woodall Young, after her husband Ellis died in 1995. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church West and a faithful usher until his health failed.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Charlotte of the home; three children: Alicia McDonnold and husband Hugh of Dallas, Kathy Peterson and husband Doug of Dallas, and Jim and Gary Kramer High of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren: Toby Meeks and wife Rachel, Thad Meeks, Ty Meeks, Kenny Peterson, and Sarah Peterson; a brother, William C. High and wife Bobbie Nell of Duncan; three sisters: Doris Marshall and husband Thurman of Amber, Irene Clayton and husband Pete of Enid, and Helen Smith and husband Don of Noble; three step-children: Brent Young and wife Cathy of Irving, Texas, Melia Igo and husband Erwin of Fletcher, and Todd Young and wife Becky of Waurika; 11 step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, neices and nephews.

Memorial contribution may be made to University of Oklahoma Health Science Center Willed Body Program and State Anatomical Board, PO Box 26901, OKC, OK 73126-0901 or a charity of your choice.
