Jack Davis

Jan. 22, 1918 — Feb. 6, 2014

DUNCAN — Jack Davis was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Riverland, Texas, to Loren and Clyda McMurry Davis. He passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2014, at his home, at 96 years of age. His mother always told him it snowed on the day he was born, and it snowed as he passed on to his eternal glory.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle officiating. Burial will follow in the Ryan Cemetery under direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Jack’s family crossed the Red River to live in the Union Valley area when he was 6 years old. He attended Union Valley School, where he played high school basketball the year Union Valley went to the state tournament.

He married Gertrude Eichor on May 19, 1937. In 1938, they took their baby girl, LaNell, and one suitcase on the train to St. Elmo, Ill., where Jack began his adult work life. Their son Lyndel was born in 1940, and the family lived their early years in West Salem, Marine and Salem, Ill. They traveled together for trips to St. Louis, and to the Illinois softball games where Jack’s pitching led the team to a state championship.

Jack’s work for Ashland Oil Company took him and Gertrude to live in Ohio and Kentucky throughout his 40-year career. He was well respected and loved by his associates for his work ethic, good temperament and his sense of humor. He retired from Ashland in 1980, when he and Gertrude returned home to Ryan.

Jack was born a natural musician. He had perfect pitch, and while he never learned to read music, he played fiddle, piano and guitar with his brother and sister at barn dances during his youth. He passed his love of music to his son and daughter, and consequently on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was the epitome of a sportsman. He loved his bird dogs and hunting. He was an accomplished fisherman. And he finished his golf career with a lifetime total of nine holes-in-one.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Boyd and Floyd; and by two sisters: Sabra and Myrtle.

Jack is survived by his wife, Gertrude of the home; a sister, Marie and Harold Miller of Tulsa; by his son, Lyndel Davis and wife Jane of Duncan; and by his daughter, LaNell Williams and her husband Virgil of Midwest City. He is survived by seven grandchildren across the country; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He also has many nieces and nephews who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 2300 Country Club Road, Duncan, OK 73533.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
