Jo Ann was born March 21, 1933, at Fort Worth, Texas, to Luther Duncan Murphy and Mary Gwendolyn (Smart) Murphy.  Her father was a career employee of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and served in many states during his career.  Consequently, Jo Ann’s early years were spent in numerous states including Texas, Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Washington DC.
She graduated from high school in Ferris, Texas, in May of 1949. She attended college at North Texas State University and University of Arkansas.
In early 1956, Jo Ann’s father was assigned to the Federal Prison in El Reno. While there, she met William C. ‘Bill’ McCoy on a blind date and they were married on April 27, 1957, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at El Reno.
At the time of their marriage, Bill was working for Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. in Duncan and Jo Ann was working in the business office for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in El Reno. She transferred to Southwestern Bell in Duncan and she and Bill lived here until her death. She retired from AT&T in Duncan in 1985 with 22 years combined service with Southwestern Bell and AT&T, after taking a 10 year break to have children.
After retirement, she undertook a career of serving the community of Duncan and its various civic projects, which she truly enjoyed.
