A benefit poker run will be held Saturday at Pirkle Pavilion by the pool in Fuqua Park to benefit Duncan Community Residence.

First bike out will be at 9 a.m., and all will be in by noon.

Lunch will be from noon to 2 p.m. with raffles and karaoke by Wanda Brown, deejay. The event will end at 3 p.m.

The residence is a home for disadvantaged adults who are unable to live on their own but who don’t need to be in a nursing home or an institution, said Brian Wolff, administrator.

“Even though the residence is a United Way of Stephens County agency, additional funds are needed to meet expenses, partly because the United Way did not meet its campaign goal last year and the support for the residence was cut by more than $6,700,” Wolff said.

The South Oklahoma Heartland of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has approved matching funds of up to $1,000. Remax of Duncan, Stephens United Methodist Church and members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will host the card stops, Wolff said.

The DCR has a lot of space to maintain. The main building is a two-story dormitory containing nine double-occupancy and five single bedrooms. Each floor has two baths. Connected to the main building by a covered walkway, the smaller back building contains the kitchen, dining area, lounge, laundry room and the office. In addition to support from the United Way, rent is charged to residents, and churches, civic groups and individuals help with the rest.

“Financial support from the community of Duncan is a mainstay for us. For this reason, Stephens County residents are given first priority when rooms are available. We appreciate the support of the community so much,” Wolff said.

Registration fee for the poker run is $15 for a meal and one poker hand. Extra poker hands may be purchased for $5 each, and extra meals are also $5.
