DRH hosts annual gala

DUNCAN — In Duncan Regional Hospital’s trip around the world, the food spoke to different cultures, a voice rose above all others and a nurse was recognized for her contributions.

The Duncan Regional Hospital Health Foundation held its annual gala Tuesday at the Simmons Center. About 215 people were in attendance to throw support into the foundation and its various causes.

“It’s because of you that we’re able to do that every day,” DRH CEO Jay Johnson said, following a video highlighting the contributions of the Health Foundation. “The foundation gave away a little more than $100,000 last year. You supported us well, and you supported the things we do.”

The theme of this year’s even was “Taste of the World,” and featured three styles of food: Barbecue, Mediterranean and New England. Toward the end of the evening, Danielle Flesher lent her voice as the night’s entertainment. Flesher sang songs to illustrate the menu, including Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing.”

Her three song performance ended with a standing ovation from the crowd.

Another person to receive a standing ovation was nurse Jodie Franzer. Franzer was this year’s recipient of the Betty Apple Award. Apple, who is the chairwoman of the DRH Foundation, presented the award.

“She’s described as ‘the go-to nurse’ at DRH,” Apple said about Franzer.

Franzer received a plaque for her contributions to the hospital. Following the award presentation, she spoke about her love for her job.

“It’s a real privilege to work for Duncan Regional Hospital,” Franzer said. “It’s great to get an award doing something you love.”

Throughout the night, tickets were sold for raffle prizes. The money for the raffle tickets go back into the foundation and its projects. Johnson said things continue to progress at the hospital and people have been positive to direction of the hospital treatment.

He read a couple of thank you cards, which talked about how well the hospital staff treated individuals.

“I probably get five thank yous to every one complaint,” Johnson said.
