The Duncan Banner
Final preparations underway at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center signal it’s time for the Chisholm Trail Ram Prairie Circuit Rodeo Finals. This is the second year for Duncan to host the three state circuit event which is a precursor to the National Finals Rodeo.
“It’s going to be bigger and better this year,” said Mike Anderson, Stephens County Fair & Expo Center Director and co-chairman of the local rodeo committee.
Getting in the mood of rodeo week hasn’t been hard for the volunteers or others associated with the event. But it has been hard work.
In getting ready, sponsor signs were being hung on both the exterior fence at the fairgrounds and around the arena indoors. Seats were being washed, the arena was being grated and today a big screen monitor is expected to be installed. It’s all part of a grand plan for a star-studded night which could hold a surprise or two.
“I can’t say, but it will be a good night,” Anderson said Wednesday. Even the best laid plans can be interrupted. What hasn’t been interrupted has been the efforts of the local committee.
The committee has been working non-stop for the past two to three years, but each year is a new rodeo, so to speak. So, for the past year, they’ve been meeting at least monthly, if not more often. Some committee members have gone, and others have joined.
Currently, the local rodeo committee consists of Mark Crutcher, Shawn Frey, Karen Henderson, Dana Schoening, Tommy Daughtrey, Lyle Roggow, Sandy and Billy Bowden, Chris Deal, Dana Askins, Shawn Stewart, Kirby (Paul Scales) Lisa Byford, Lisa Taylor, Mel and Manya Reid, Mary Newman, Matt Tucker, Vanessa Harris, Christy Sellers, and committee co-chairman, Mike Anderson and Joe Henderson.
“Gosh, I hope I haven’t left anyone off,” Anderson said as he was walking through the fairgrounds Wednesday, trying to make a mental checklist of the many other tasks that needed doing before the show opens tonight.
