Duncan businesses reflect progress

DUNCAN — Already under construction, the Quality Inn in Duncan is getting a remodel that has the hotel living up to its name.

The main portion of the building is undergoing a several million dollar refurbishing to its 96 rooms. This part will remain under the Quality Inn name. To the south, a smaller separate section housing about 30 rooms will become a Super 8.

“An investment group purchased the property several months ago and is already doing an extensive remodeling that will be a great upgrade,” said Chris Deal, Duncan Chamber of Commerce & Industry president.

“They are trying to get ready for several fall events, of which they are hosts.”

The remodels, as well as new hotels coming into the community, have helped to raise the standard of hotels that have been in place for some time, Deal said. He said he also hopes it has improved how the people of Duncan see and talk about their community.

“Current hotels have been renovating as well,” he said.

“When people come in, it may be someone looking to invest in the community, so it’s important to be nice and have a good attitude. Say constructive things on Facebook, because we want to put the true face of Duncan out there and that is that we are positive and forward thinking.”

Having a Super 8 in the community will offer residents and visitors a more budget conscious place to stay, Deal said. He has also had more inquiries from other hoteliers about the Duncan area.

“There have been people looking to develop other hotels in the area but there are no plans at this time,” he said. “There is also interest on housing developments, which we are needing desperately.”

When Deal gets calls from hoteliers or those looking into placing a housing development, he sends them demographics and housing data he has. Attention is being drawn from the increasing retail activity in town, he said.

“It’s promising for the community,” said Deal. “We have a wonderful infrastructure in place for what may potentially come of the activity.”

Such activity includes the soft opening of Maurices on Aug. 21. There will be a ribbon cutting to mark their official opening on Aug. 22.

Also on Thursday, the CVS sign went up and another says “Coming Soon.”

Duncan residents are also hopeful that the former Hastings building won’t remain vacant for long.

Deal said there has been solid interest from several businesses about the property and he has answered several letters of intent. However, it is now in the hands of the property owners.

“There is one business that has even gone as far to enter into rental style negotiation but I haven’t heard anything. The owners have to accept it,” said Deal, who is not able to release any of the interested parties’ names. “I wouldn’t want to interrupt any negotiations.”
