As summer creeps ever closer, Stephens County has plenty of activities to offer the community in May.

There will be quite a bit of activity out at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center show barns this month, starting with the 24th annual Chisholm Trail Stampede PRCA Rodeo on Friday and Saturday. This event qualifies its participants to participate in the Prairie Circuit finals.

Those who attend will also see the crowning of the 2013 Chisholm Trail Rodeo Queen. Rodeo events begin at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Next in the arena will be the Corporation Club Lamb Sale on May 19, followed by the Peruvian Horse Show May 25-26. The Southwest District 4-H Horse Show will take place May 30 through June 1. This is a regional horse show for all disciplines including pleasure, classes and trail.

Other buildings at the Stephens County Fair & Expo will be seeing a lot of action this month as well. Duncan Crafts, Arts and Hobbies Association Spring Craft Show is this Friday and Saturday. Mother’s Day is May 12 and there is sure to be plenty of homemade items to surprise your mom with from the show.

The annual GOP Fish Fry will take place at 6 p.m. May 18 at the fairgrounds, hosted by the Stephens County Republican Party. The fundraiser usually draws a crowd of about 800 and serves up some 150 pounds of catfish.

Finally, there will be the Fishing and Tackle Show May 31-June 1, which is a World Association Tackle Collectors Show. Times are 12-6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

This event coordinates with the 14th annual Carp Tournament, which begins at 5 p.m. May 31 and goes until 2 p.m. June 1 at Duncan Lake. Prizes are awarded for most fish and largest fish.

Another exciting event is the Chamber Bid Bash, held by the Duncan Chamber of Commerce at 6 p.m. May 31 at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club. This is an evening of fun, food and festivities that features dinner and auctions.

The 2nd annual Duncan Dulcimer Club/Duncan Senior Citizens potluck luncheon and Jam Session will be from noon to 4 p.m. May 19 at Fuqua Park.

Red River Rocketeers will have its monthly rocket launch at noon May 18 at Cape Greenwood.

Besides Mother’s Day, May also has a few other national days of recognition, such as National Day of Prayer on Thursday and National Nurses Day on May 6. For the National Day of Prayer, the Duncan Christian Men’s Bible Group is hosting a program from noon to 12:50 Thursday in the Simmons Center Chisholm Trail Hall III.

May is also graduation month for all area high schools. Bray-Doyle is the first to hold commencement at 8 p.m. May 10. Graduations on May 17 begin with Central High at 6 p.m., followed by Marlow, Empire and Comanche, all beginning at 7 p.m.

Velma’s graduation is at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23 and Duncan’s is at 8 p.m. Friday, May 24.
