Duggar wins Best of Show in crapemyrtle photo contest

DUNCAN — Debbie Duggar, a fine art and award winning photographer, won this year’s Best of Show ribbon at the annual Crapemyrtle Capital of Oklahoma Photography contest, now in its third year.

Second place went to Anita Page of Lawton, and Honorable Mention to Kayce Booth of Duncan for their entries.

The photos are on display at Duncan Public Library, where the judging took place Friday evening. Photographers Michael Harris and Toni Hopper conducted the honors again as they did last year. Photographer’s names are hidden from the judges until after they make their decisions.

Carolyn Rodgers, who started the contest as a way to help promote the city’s title as Crapemyrtle Capital of Oklahoma, said she enjoys listening to the judges as they deliberate over the images. Rodgers is also the Duncan Beautification Committee chairwoman.

The first year of the contest, 49 images were entered and judged by Dr. Bob Palmer. The second year, that doubled to about 100 entries.

Entries were down this year, which surprised Rodgers. Only 14 photographers entered images. A special category was set for photoshopped images.

The Best of Show winners are matted and framed for display at the office of Duncan Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Duggar’s image will join the previous winners of Lisa Scifres (2012) and Sonya Ables (2011). In the first year, Ables won both the People’s Choice and Best of Show. Scifres won an Honorable Mention also last year.

Visitors to the library who view the entries have through the month of October to cast their votes for People’s Choice.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
