Governor to headline local GOP fish fry

DUNCAN — The Stephens County Republican Party reeled in a big one for its annual fish fry.

Gov. Mary Fallin will be the keynote speaker for the fund-raising event, which has gained a statewide reputation for attracting party headliners since it began 10 year ago, said Leon Farris, Stephens County Republican Party chairman.

The fish fry is the second-biggest Republican gathering in the state, behind the party’s annual state convention, Farris said.

“We expect to sell it out,” Farris said of the May 17 gathering at the county fairground.

Past fish fries that drew large turnouts featured J.C. Watts, the OU quarterback who served in Congress, and U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of the year, Farris said.

The fish fry is the main fund-raising event for the county Republicans.

Individual tickets are $25 and tables can be bought for $250, Farris said.

A table sponsorship garners two tickets to a private reception for the governor, who is running for re-election to her second term.

Other statewide public officeholders also are expected, Farris said.
